BILATERAL RELATIONS
Brief history:
On December 31, 1991, Malaysia recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
On April 5, 1993, diplomatic relations were established between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Malaysia.
On July, 2007, Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan has been established in Malaysia.
On April, 2014, Embassy of Malaysia has been established in Azerbaijan.
Recent bilateral relations (past five years)
On February 10-13, 2015 a delegation headed by Mr. Vugar Gulmammadov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Chamber of Accounts visited Malaysia in order to attend XIII Asian Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (ASOSAI) Assembly and 6th ASOSAI Symposium.
On May 2-5, 2015 a delegation headed by Mr. Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah, the Second Minister of Finance of Malaysia visited Azerbaijan in order to attend Annual Meeting of Board of Directors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) that took place in Baku.
On June 2-5, 2015 a delegation headed by Mr. Abu Bakar Koyakutty, the Director of Oil & Gas and Chemical Section of MATRADE of Malaysia visited Azerbaijan to participate in 22nd International Caspian Oil and Gas conference were held in Baku.
On June 3-6, 2015 a delegation headed by the President of PETRONAS, Mr. Wan Zulkiflee, paid a visit to Azerbaijan.
On September 2-4, 2015, a delegation headed by the President of PETRONAS, Mr. Wan Zulkiflee, paid a visit to Azerbaijan. During the visit, the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and PETRONAS signed an “Addendum to the Memorandum of Mutual Understanding”.
On September 16-19, 2015, Chairman of the Malaysia based World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) Mr. Musa Hitam paid a visit to Azerbaijan as the Special Representative of the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
On November 3-5, 2015, a delegation headed by the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Yagub Eyyubov paid a visit to Malaysia to attend the 11th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) held in Kuala Lumpur.
On February 3-5, 2016 a delegation led by Deputy Prosecutor General, head of Anti-Corruption Department under the Prosecutor-General Kamran Aliyev visited Malaysia. A memorandum of understanding on cooperation in fighting against corruption was signed with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) during the visit.
On March 8-11, 2016, a delegation headed by the former Prime Minister of Malaysia Mr. Abdullah Ahmad Badawi paid a visit to Azerbaijan to attend the IV Global Baku Forum and 33rd Annual Plenary Session of the InterAction Council held in Baku.
On April 11-14, 2016, a delegation headed by Mr. Ronald Kiandee, Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives of the Malaysian Parliament, head of the Azerbaijan-Malaysia interparliamentary friendship group, paid a visit to Azerbaijan.
On April 18-21, 2016 a delegation led by Mr. Yavar Jamalov, Defense Industry Minister of Azerbaijan visited Malaysia to attend 15th Defense Services Asia Exhibition and Conference (DSA-2016).
On September 1-4, 2016 Ms. Sevinj Fataliyeva, Member of Parliament, and Head of International Relations of the New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) and Mr. Ramin Mammadov, Member of the Political Council of NAP visited Malaysia to attend 9th General Assembly of International Conference of Asian Political Parties.
On October 16-18 Datuk Zakaria Abd Wahab, Editor-in-Chief and Ms. Nor Faridah Abdul Rashid, International Desk Editor from BERNAMA – Malaysian National News Agency visited Azerbaijan to participate in the 16th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA).
On November 10-16, 2016, a delegation led by Mr. Mahir Aslanov, head of the working group on Azerbaijan-Malaysia interparliamentary relations paid a visit to Malaysia.
On April 8-9, 2017 a delegation from Ministry Youth and Sport of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan Scouts Association paid a visit to Malaysia to take part in Organization of Islamic Cooperation Youth Capital Halal Food and Fashion Festival” in Putrajaya.
On October 2-3, 2017 Mr. Zainal Azman bin Abu Seman, Deputy Director General of NADMA, Malaysia visited Azerbaijan to attend Asian Conference on Disaster Reduction hosted by Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
On April 5-6, 2018, a delegation headed by the Deputy Secretary-General for multilateral affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Mr. Kennedy Jawan attended 18th Mid-term Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Baku.
On October 15, 2018 An Azerbaijani delegation headed by Mr. Nahid Bagirov, Chairman of AZTA visited Malaysia. During the visit a Partnership Memorandum between Azerbaijan Tourism Association (AZTA) and Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) was signed in Kuala Lumpur.
On December 18-21, 2019 a delegation led by Mr. Yusif Yusifov, Deputy Head of State Committee of Statistics of Azerbaijan visited Malaysia.
On February 6-10, 2020 Mr. YB Datuk Rozman Bin Isli, Member of Parliament of Malaysia and Head of the Malaysia-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Friendship Group in Malaysian Parliament visited Azerbaijan as a part of international mission to observe Parliamentary Elections held on February, 2020.
On January 21-24, 2022 Kamaruddin Jaffar, Deputy Foreign Minister of Malaysia paid a working visit to Azerbaijan.
On February 25-28, 2022 a delegation led by Mohamad Zabawi, Director General of the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) visited Azerbaijan.
On March 28-31, 2022 a delegation led by Deputy Minister of Defense Industry Mehman Bakhishov visited Malaysia to organize the Azerbaijan pavilion at the "Asia National Security-2022" exhibition.
On April 16-19, 2022 a delegation led by Datuk Suleyman bin Mohamed, Executive Director of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall's Urban Planning Department, visited Baku.
On July 12-16, 2022 Mr. Elnur Mammadov, Deputy Foreign Minister Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan visited Malaysia and held 1st round of political consultations between Malaysia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
On September 14-16, 2022 Executive Director of Baku Zoological Park Nazakat Isayeva paid a working visit to Malaysia.
On October 5-6, 2022 Dr. Alias bin Rameli, the director of the Department of Urban Planning of the Ministry of Housing and Local Self-Government of Malaysia has represented his country at the National Urban Forum held in cooperation with the UN Habitat Program (UN-Habitat) in the city of Agdam.
On May 22-26, 2023 a delegation led by Gunduz Ismayilov, the deputy chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Institutions of the Republic of Azerbaijan paid a working visit to Malaysia.
High level visits and meetings
Heads of governments
On September 11-12, 2014, Prime Minister of Malaysia H.E. Mr. Mohammad Najib Tun Abdul Razak paid an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
On October 24-26, 2019 Prime Minister of Malaysia H.E. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad visited Azerbaijan to attend the 18th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit.
On May 4, 2020 Prime Minister of Malaysia H.E. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin participated in the Online Summit Level Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Contact Group via video conferencing organized on the initiative of H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Ministers of Foreign Affairs
On March 16-18, 2006, Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov paid an official visit to Malaysia.
On June 5-6, 2014, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia H.E. Mr. Anifah Aman paid an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
On April 25-27, 2016, the delegation headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia H.E. Mr. Anifah Aman paid a visit to Azerbaijan to attend the 7th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations held in Baku.
On January 19, 2017, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov paid a visit to Malaysia to attend the extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the OIC, held in Kuala Lumpur.
On July 5-6 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir attended Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement in Azerbaijan
Visits from Parliaments
On November 6-8, 2012, Chairman of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan H.E. Mr. Ogtay Asadov paid an official visit to Malaysia.
On May 6-9, 2023, Head of the Working Group on the Azerbaijan – Malaysia Inter – parliamentary Relations, Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr.Vugar Bayramov paid an official visit to Malaysia.
On June 30 - July 1, 2022 the delegation led by the Deputy Speaker of the Malaysian Parliament, Dato' Haji Mohd Rashid Hasno, participated in the Baku Conference of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement.
On May 6-10, 2023 Mr. Vugar Bayramov, member of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, head of the working group on Azerbaijan-Malaysia inter-parliamentary relations paid a working visit to Malaysia.
On May 16, 2023 Mr. Tuan Haji Aminolhuda bin Hassan, the head of the Malaysia-West Asia friendship group operating within the House of Representatives of the Malaysian Parliament, visited Baku to participate in a special session dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev.
On April 28 - May 5, 2024 a delegation led by Honourable Datuk Mutang Tagal, the President of the Senate of the Malaysian Parliament paid official visit to Azerbaijan.
Humanitarian Cooperation
On 18-20 September 2015, Malaysian Cultural Days were held in Baku.
On November 23-27, 2015, the delegation headed by H.E. Mr. Khair Mohamad Yusof, Director-General for education in the Ministry of Education of Malaysia, paid a visit to Azerbaijan to attend the 12th General Conference of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the 36th meeting of the Executive Council held in Baku.
On September 01-14, 2016, delegation headed by the President of the Chess Federation of Malaysia, Mr. Ramli Ngah Talib paid a visit to Azerbaijan to attend the 42nd World Chess Olympiad, and the 87th Congress of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) held in Baku.
On September 29-30, 2016, members of the Azerbaijan-Malaysia interparliamentary friendship group in the Parliament of Malaysia H.E. Mr. Aaron Ago anak Dagang and H.E. Mr. Liang Teck Meng paid a visit to Azerbaijan to attend the V Baku International Humanitarian Forum.
On 28-30 September 2017, H.E. Ms. Nafisah Ahmad, Director-General of the National Library of Malaysia paid a visit to Azerbaijan to attend the V Baku International Book Exhibition and the International Scientific Conference on the theme of “New challenges, new ideas, new requirements for libraries: books, reading, innovations”.
On November 21-26, 2017, UniMAP delegation headed by the Crown Prince of the Malaysian state of Perlis, Rector of Perlis University of Malaysia (UniMAP) His Royal Highness Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra paid a visit to Azerbaijan.
On July 11-14, 2018, H.E. Mr. Tahir Amiraslanov, Director-General of the Azerbaijan National Culinary Center, paid a visit to Malaysia to attend the next World Congress of World Assembly of Culinary Organizations (WACS) and the World Food Exhibition held in Kuala Lumpur.
On November 10 – December 18, 2019 Representatives of 220 Malaysian tourism companies paid a visit to Azerbaijan. Co-organized by the Malaysia’s GM Travel House company and Azerbaijan’s Embassy in this country, the visit aimed to boost cooperation with the Azerbaijan`s tourism companies.
